Many special needs students have problems with communication and the computer can help tremendously, not only to increase communication but other areas of learning as well. “A computer is just one piece of communication training these children receive, but it’s a very important component because it motivates the students and helps teachers and other people become more aware of what they can do: When you see a new response, you say to yourself, how can I transfer this response off the computer. As a result of the child showing us a new skill, we become very motivated to try other things. Technology advances things such as enlarges text, spell check and text-to-speech and are all very helpful to students with disabilities. Being able to communicate on their own, allows special needs students to gain self-esteem, confidence and respect from others. My Vision is to ensure all students are given the opportunity to participate in all areas of the classroom and advance in education and communication.

Technology plays a huge role in this vision by allowing the special needs student to feel they are a part of the class. Technology-based applications give students access to worlds and environments that are inaccessible, too expensive, or too dangerous in a classroom setting; enable students with disabilities to experience labs and field trips at their own pace; and allow them to repeat the experience as many times as necessary. ” There are so many field trips that students with special needs do not get to experience because of the reasons listed above. Technology has allowed these students to participate and experience these trips when they would not without technology.

This in my opinion is so important to help the special needs student feel that they are part of their class when often times they do not feel accepted and feel left out. “The common trend behind many useful products is that they are open-ended. This means they allow the creation of customized activities for individual students needs. Open-ended products offer Special Education teachers greater flexibility in the classroom. ” By using these products this allows each student to be able to progress at their pace and feel like they are accomplishing something.

I first decided to become a Special Education teacher when I accepted a job at a local elementary school in the Special Ed classroom. When I first started I was dreading going to work every day. But as the school year progressed, I found myself connecting with these children on a level I never knew existed. At that moment, I knew God had placed me there and this was my calling. My calling is to teach special needs children and help them succeed and progress in the classroom and life.

I am so excited to begin my teaching career and begin influencing children’s lives just as I have seen my Mother do for the past twenty years. Communication Plan As I think about my career in Special Education and communication in the classroom, technology plays a huge role in communication between special needs students and others. Many special needs students have problems communicating and need to find other ways to communicate. Technology has allowed them to gain access to different ways of communication when often they could not communicate.

The computer is one tool that is used often in the Special Education classroom as a means of communication. In my classroom, I too will implement the computer as a tool to communicate between parents, students and other teachers so that we are all on the same page and can assist the student in their needs in communication. Parents, for any numbers of reasons, are often unfamiliar with the intricacies of the school day, homework routines, assessment activities and procedures for grading and evaluating student progress. One of the communication tools I will use will be a ‘pink’ sheet that is sent home with ach student every day. This will allow the parent to see how the student behaved in class and any homework that is due the next day. In return, the student will have a parent or guardian sign it and return it to the teacher for a star. At the end of the week, these stars become awards that the student can exchange for prizes. This tool is very successful, as I have seen it used in the Special Education classroom. It is very affective when often the teacher does not have time to communicate with each parent every day about the happenings in the classroom.

This tool allows the parents to have an idea of behavior and other items that occurred in the classroom. Students’ communication needs and abilities change over time, as do the corresponding communication demands and opportunities they experience. It is thus important to monitor and reassess students’ uses of their longitudinally. Equally important are ongoing assessments of teachers’, paraprofessionals’, classmates’ and others interactions with the children. Technology is a lot like communication, it changes over time. But the new technology, in my opinion, is a great tool for students with disabilities.

It allows them to have access to communication tools that they would not often have access to. The computer has allowed this opportunity and has given students with special needs a great tool to access from home and at school. This allows them to feel confident in themselves as they can do it on their own. The computer also allows the parents to have access to students’ grades. The school often has a website for each classroom that allows parents and teachers to communicate any concerns. This is a great tool to keep parents involved in the classroom when often times they are not.

This is another tool I will use in my classroom, either by using the school website or to create my own so that my parents can have access to grades and other items involving their children in my classroom. No one would argue that communication between parents and educators is a bad thing. When families and schools share their expectations, their values about learning and behavior, and their views on roles and responsibilities, students learn more and both parents and school personnel feel supported and appreciated. In my opinion, it is important to have everyone involved in a special needs education.

Everyone needs to be on the same page so that the student can receive the best opportunity available to help them succeed in life and in their education. Email is a great tool that often many teachers use to keep in contact with parents and other educators. Email today is so accessible due to technology. It allows everyone to communicate no matter where they are in their hectic schedule and is delivered in an instant. I will use email to communicate with parents and other co-workers about students and meetings to ensure everyone is working on the same page.

Communication is a huge part of any education, but is more important in a Special Education classroom. Students with disabilities need more attention and need everyone in their circle to be working on the same page. Parents and teachers both have the same role in their lives, making sure they succeed in the classroom and in life. Communication is needed in our everyday lives to be able to succeed. Technology has assisted Special needs students to feel more confident and gain access to ways of communication that they did not have before.

I know in my classroom communication will be used daily and in a variety of ways. I am looking forward to being able to help special needs students succeed! Ethics When I sit to write about Ethics in my classroom, I think of my days in the Special Education classroom as a teacher assistant. These days, ethics are something that has changed tremendously and is continuing to change from decade to decade. When I was in school, there was no talking back to the teacher or no making fun of other students’. Of course, this did happen from time to time but not as much as today.

Special Education students are students whom need extra help and often have learning disabilities. I saw many other students making fun of these students when in fact they are just like them, they want to be accepted and part of a group. All students should respect each other and give the same respect they expect to get in return. “Even though our sense of ethics is gradually improving; the technology is progressing far more rapidly than our ethics. ” Ethics in technology are becoming more and more difficult. You see plagiarism often in higher level classes from high school to college and it only seems to be getting worse.

When an author takes the time to write a book or do research for a journal article, they should be given credit and be assured that no one will plagiarize their work. In my opinion, I do not think students understand the extent of the consequences of plagiarizing. Technology offers a lot of resources for instructors and teachers to recognize plagiarism such as turn it in. This program allows the student to submit their paper and it assesses it to ensure that the work is that of the student and not someone else’s.

Once it is turned in the instructor or teacher can also view the document and see the percentage of originality. “The standard topics of computer ethics such as invasions of privacy, misuse of personal data and disrupted ownership of intellectual property are common in today’s classroom. ” Internet security is a huge topic among teachers, administration and parents in the school. Students’ safety is number one and there should be security blocks put into place in all schools and public computers. Parents are concerned with internet safety while their children are using a computer.

Just as parents would put a security into place on their own personal computer at home for their child, the school should do the same for all the students. In my classroom, internet security will be top priority for all students’ having access to the computer. There will be specific educational websites students are allowed to access and if caught trying to access others not acceptable, there will be consequences. Internet predators are everywhere and are looking for those gullible students whom are unhappy. By placing internet security and blocking specific sites, this will ensure students safety.

As a teacher, I will also be monitoring closely when we are in the computer lab so that students know the importance of internet safety and that it is not something to take lightly. “The role the social and political plays in shaping the kind of beings we become, and on the affirmation of difference over sameness and transcendental structures. ” Often times, students relate to what they see on television and what key position holders in their community are doing and behaving. Ethics in these positions often times get overlooked and do not exist.

For example, when it is time for the Presidential election you often see nominees putting down the other one to just get ahead. They do this by pointing out their faults or mistakes they have made in the past. This is not teaching children good ethics or morals. My families golden rule has always been ‘treat others as you want to be treated’, I always try to abide by this and encourage those around me to do the same. Our society changes rapidly and is getting away from ethics and morals that our country was founded on.

In my classroom and in the computer lab, this will be a key rule that students will be required to abide by. By giving respect to others, they will in return give you respect back. This ensures things to run smoothly, no one’s feelings getting hurt or no student being left out. Although this rule is extremely important to live by, it is most important in the classroom so that all students feel part of the class and not left out. As technology changes and continues to change very rapidly, the one thing that teachers can keep constant is the ethics in and out of the classroom.

Ethics are passed down from generation to generation and now seems like are being forgotten. As teachers, we can start early while the child is young to encourage them to do the right thing. Ethics in technology is also important to ensure the students’ safety while using technology under the teacher’s direction. I hope to encourage, implement and show the ethics I was taught and be an example to my students. Software to Support Assessment Technology has came a long way in the past decade and will continue to progress as society progresses. Technology in the classroom has not only helped teachers but students as well.

It has allowed teachers to use many different ways of teaching instead of just using the traditional textbook. Students all learn differently and often time’s teachers run into not being able to get through to all students. By adding technology into the classroom, it allows teachers to present material in a different way and allows students to learn quickly and efficiently. Technology has helped students become more efficient in their coursework and become more interested in the material being taught and presented. “Formative assessment is typically employed to collect relevant data ertaining to cultural attributes and contextual factors believed to affect the implementation of intervention factors. ” Formative assessment is an assessment used by teachers to gather data about the students work and be able to give adequate feedback to the student and parents. Positive feedback is helpful to any student but more so a Special Education student. Being a Special Education major, I feel it necessary to use formative assessment in the classroom. This not only gives the teacher an insight to the student’s problem areas but allows them to rework the material so that the student will understand it better on their level.

Many times Special Education students get discouraged when they do not understand material. By getting discouraged, they often want to place it on the back burner and not learn it at all. When in actuality it is only hurting the student and preventing them from learning the necessary material. Formative assessment is a key factor in the success of all students. “Self-assessment can help to break this conformist tendency and encourage critical thinking, which is defined as the ability to carry out self directed inquiry and make reasoned judgments as the results. Summative assessment allows teachers to test on material students have learned in a particular class. An example of this would be E. O. I. (end of instruction) tests at the end of certain high school level courses. The student must pass the test in order to receive their diploma and graduate high school. If they do not pass, the student must do remediation and take the test again. This not only puts pressure on the student but the teacher as well. Teachers are there to help students learn and gain knowledge of classes that they will need in the future to further them in life.

In my opinion, summative assessment is not useful and should not be used in schools. I do agree it is necessary to see if the student is learning and the teacher is doing their job. However, tests like the E. O. I. puts way too much pressure on the student. I have seen students stress out almost two months ahead of the test because they want to pass and start getting nervous. Also, some students are not good at taking tests and the pressure gets to them too much. Which in turn puts pressure on the student and then they do not do as well as they might have on a computer based test.

Technology assisted tests allows the student to feel more comfortable and relaxed during the tests instead of being stressed out and nervous. “High-profile public and political attention to the highly-taunted promises that the integration of information technology into the education curriculum will change forever in the way in which teachers teach and students learn. ” Technology has become more and more resourceful and will continue to do so in the years to come. Technology in the classroom allows teachers and students to learn in a whole different way.

It has given teachers advantages and access to many things on the web that they did not have in earlier times. This in turn gives the advantage to the student being able to access more information and learning more than what’s only in the textbook. Technology has in a sense changed the way teachers teach and has in a lot of ways made it easier for students to learn. Most students are familiar with computers and enjoy spending time on the computer. If teachers find something a student likes and incorporates it into teaching, the student will want to learn and want to succeed.

Every student learns differently and in many different ways, technology allows this to be easily done. Teachers have been teaching students for many years and will continue to teach as the year’s progress. Teaching is not a profession that one goes into to become rich, it is a passion and a likeness of seeing students succeed. I have watched my Mother influence students for more than twenty years and I just hope one day I can become the teacher that she is. She has spent many nights planning lesson plans, grading and creating different ways of learning for different students. Technology has assisted in this process greatly!

Technology should be used in every classroom to assist the teacher in teaching the material and the student learn quicker and more efficiently. Technology Plan Technology changes around us constantly and as do the classrooms. Teachers often have a hard time keeping up with changes and often time’s students are more ‘up-to-date’ than teachers are. Schools today are finding it harder and harder to keep ‘up-to-date’ with technology due to the changes and financial obligations. Technology is used everywhere and is easily accessed anywhere today. Many places and schools now offer wireless internet to be accessed asily when students and people need access. Technology will continue to grow rapidly and continue to become greater and greater. It has helped teachers have access to resources that they did not have in other decades. “All the schools will have wireless Internet so students can use their own devices, from laptops to smartphones with Wi-Fi. Students without computers can get access to school computers. ” Wireless Internet is easily accessed now from restaurants to hotels. You can get it anytime and almost anywhere. Schools offering wireless internet give students advantages to be able to do research in their classroom without leaving.

This allows teachers to plan group projects and WebQuests. In my opinion, wireless is a better option for schools and students versus not having wireless internet accessible giving students the advantage in technology. On the down side of wireless being used in schools, this also allows students easier access to their phones which in turn tempts them to cheat or help their friend on tests. Many schools today, although wireless, do not allow students to carry their cell phones or have them turned on while in the classroom. While this is a good rule to have in place, students often find ways around them.

If a student is going to cheat, they will find a way no matter what it takes. So, in my opinion, the pros for wireless in the classrooms outweigh the cons by a huge margin. “Improved integration of technology in K-12 instruction has become a national imperative in the United States. Numerous state and federal governmental bodies have adopted legislation supporting the use of computers and the internet as a tool to improve academic achievement. ” Technology in the classroom is a huge advantage for all students and teachers. It allows the teacher to access websites and other documents in the classroom without leaving.

Technology not only has grown from day to day but is still growing and will continue to do so for a long time. Many teachers can use technology as an advantage to help students comprehend the material being taught. Students in past decades were only taught from textbooks, while textbooks are very resourceful and still are used in the classroom, technology has allowed teachers to be able to teach in a whole other light. For example, the smart board is a great technology invention that allows teachers to project coursework right on the board for a group discussion.

This allows the student to have a bigger example of the material being presented and allows the teacher to be hands on with all students. I have used the smart board and it was very beneficial to students and me being the instructor as well. It was easier for the students to see the bigger picture and projected where everyone could learn as a group and ask questions as a group. It is also useful for play days to be able to project a movie easily. The smart board enhances the classroom by a huge margin and allows teachers and students to have access to the web so that they can resource other sites as well.

Often times the textbook will have an example website listed in the text, with the smart board in place teachers can access it while instructing and incorporate it into the lesson plan. “The nature of literacy is changing as new technologies for reading, writing and communication regularly appear. Traditional literacy skills will continue to be necessary, but we must integrate new literacies into the classroom if we intend to prepare students for the 21st Century. ” The con to technology being used in the classroom is that students in today’s society will rely on technology instead of using resources such as libraries.

While technology is very helpful and resourceful, sometimes the ‘old fashioned’ use of resources is more beneficial. For example, if students were researching their family heritage, the library would be useful for past newspapers and heritage. Some would argue for technology being that there are several websites now that offer ancestry. Overall technology in the classroom is a huge advantage for teachers and students. It allows the teacher to facilitate and enhance their lesson plans and incorporate other resources offered on the web. Technology is a great tool used everywhere in today’s society by many different people.

By introducing it into the classroom early, it allows students to become familiar so that when they are ready to enter to the career world, they will be able to be technology savvy. Educational technology has allowed teachers access to new ways of teaching that did not exist several years ago. The technology has given teachers access to different material where they can present it in a different way than by the traditional textbook. Some of the technology teacher’s use include: smart boards, computers, Ipads and internet. The smart board allows the teacher to project the material on a screen in front of the classroom to give students an easier understanding of the material. It also allows the teacher to explain or work out problems with the students as a group of instead of individually.

A lot of students are visual learners and this allows them to learn more quickly and efficiently. It also allows the student to work out a problem as the teacher does and be able to ask questions as they arise in a step-by-step demonstration rather than seeing it only on paper. “Students go through all the regular routine as they would in any other class in terms of reviewing the subject material, daily learning, targets, use of standard-based curriculum, homework and even exams. However, the use of Ipads has made this routine completely paperless and has given students and teachers the opportunity to see immediate results. Technology changes every day and is becoming more and more difficult for teachers to keep up with modern technology. By integrating technology such as Ipads in to the classroom, this not only allows teachers to become familiar with them but students as well. Not to mention the fact that it does allow them to do everything paperless, as stated above, and see results immediately. Students learn in all different ways, some are visual and some are often technology driven. With technology being integrated into the classroom, students often get more excited about learning if it’s something they enjoy doing outside of school.

Learning is supposed to fun, but often times students get discouraged if they are not learning as quickly as their peers. Technology allows students to incorporate something they are already familiar with into a learning setting and use it to their advantage of learning and exploring new things. “The effective use of computer technology in the classroom directly relates to the amount of technology training the teacher has experienced. ” Often times in the classroom, the student knows more about technology than the teacher. Technology changes daily and is still continuing to change as we speak.

It is very difficult to keep up with all the new software or inventions, however, if used correctly and efficiently technology can be a huge help to the teacher in teaching the subject material. Teachers often feel uncomfortable using certain software of different technology and this just hinders the learning process for the student as well. I know it is difficult to keep up with technology as much as it changes, but teachers need to keep up not only so they can teach it correctly but also keep up with students. Technology can assist teachers in all areas of teaching and getting ready for instruction.

The internet assists in doing research for lesson plans or projecting different subject matters for the entire class to see and be involved. Without technology, teachers teach from the standard textbook and often time’s students become bored since it does not hold their attention very well. By integrating technology, this allows teachers to keep the attention of students while they are teaching new material. Technology is used in many different areas of the classroom from projecting lessons on the screen to assisting teachers plan material to teach. Teaching has changed even from when I was in school and the main reason is technology.

Technology really assists Special Education students as it makes them feel as if they are part of their class. It also assists them in areas such as speak-to-type, which allows them to speak the words and the computer types it for them. Special Education students often feel left out and behind from their other peers, technology has allowed them to feel as a part of them. The websites that I found are a great fit for any student and teacher but more so, I think, in the Special Ed classroom. As a teacher, they will be used to keep students busy while I work in groups on other subject material such as reading.

As a Special Education major, I know technology will be used in my classroom daily and I plan on keeping up with technology so that I can better assist my students in the learning process. Reflection of Technology in the Classroom When I first began this course, I was not looking forward to it. I assumed it was over general technology used in the classroom such as internet and computers. To my surprise, I learned a lot more in this course than I figured to begin with. This course has not only opened my eyes to other available technology for use in the classroom, but also ways to use technology as an advantage in the classroom for learning.

Technology continues to change and will continue to change in the future. As a Special Education major, technology has not only assisted in the learning but also has assisted students with disabilities feel as if they are a part of the class and feel more confident. My Mission and Vision for my classroom is to prepare students to be more productive in all areas of education through the use of technology; so that all students can learn and grow through technology and use it as a tool to advance in the classroom and life as well. Technology has came a long way and is still continuing to improve as we speak.

In the special education classroom, technology is very important. It allows students whom cannot type or speak put down their thoughts, it also allows students with visual impairments the opportunity to see when often times they cannot on a blackboard. Special education has changed the way of teachers teach in the classroom due to technology. Technology has allowed students the opportunity to feel as part of a group and feel confident about themselves. It is my goal to ensure all students are treated equally by their peers and others while under my direction in my classroom.

Technology has also changed the ways teachers teach in the classroom. For instance, there are several different educational websites that teachers can use to gain the attention of the students and keep their attention during the lesson. Teachers can also do Webquest from the computer for a group lesson for the entire class. Students now are into playing video games or playing on the computer. By incorporating this into learning, the students get excited and want to learn. In my opinion, this is a great tool to use so that all students can learn together instead of some not paying attention.

All students are interested in different subject areas and material, technology allows teachers to present it in a way that all students are interested. Another important area of the classroom and technology is the ethics that goes along with it. Ethics in the classroom are as important as the teaching the students the material. Ethics are not only the responsibility of the teachers and administration of the school but also parents. Parents often let the school take responsibility and be the bad guy when it comes to computer/internet safety. Internet safety is such an important part of learning to using technology.

There are so many predators out there looking for students whom will share information and in an instant are looking for the perfect time to make their move. Students do not realize how serious this is and that we all need to take precautions, even as adults. With many social websites such as facebook it is becoming easier for predators to have access to where children are or what they are doing. Ethics is where all of this comes into play, teaching students the correct way to use the internet and the things not to do. Being from a family of teachers, I have seen the ins and outs and changes in the classroom.

I have taken notes, learned, processed and hopefully will have most of the kinks worked out and know how I want my classroom ran by time I finish up my degree. I cannot wait until I get to be the one influencing lives and making a difference. I have watched my Mother do this for over twenty-five years and hope that one day too I can be as influential as she has been over the years. It is my mission and goal to ensure all students under my direction are taught to the best of my ability and that I make use of the technology in and around my classroom to better assist my students in their learning process and their life skills.

I know there are not many people out there that would want to take on the task of being a Special Education teacher, but I know in my heart this is where God wants me to be making a difference.
