I live near Dade City, Florida. In Dade City, there is a portion of the city that is predominately African American. This portion of the city has fewer full-sized grocery stores, less businesses, and gets a bad reputation for it simply being predominately African American. The high crime rates here are no different than in poorer predominately white areas–yet the reputation remains and only affects this portion of town. If people were to build more businesses here, and invest in proper public infrastructure, more people would frequent this area–and the community would have more jobs. By addressing the poverty issues, and the lack of assistance provided to this area, I believe it could become much less segregated. But because of its racist reputation, the lack of care continues.
In our reading, we learned that over time, African American families stay generationally in these areas because of segregation (Desmond and Emirbayer, 2010, p. 168). These old ways of thinking that keep masked segregation continuing, must come to an end. These parts of towns and neighborhoods must be taken care of and be given the same attention as the predominately white areas.
The city I reside in is Sumter, South Carolina. Sumter located in Sumter County and is regionally locating in the middle of the state. Sumter has close to 40,000 people in its population. This includes many military veterans and retirees but does not specifically include all of the military members affiliated with Shaw Air Force Base. The racial make-up of the city is almost equally split. About 45% are considered white and about 49% or considered non-white. The 49% of the cities non-white population does not include all other races than white.
In the city there are many pocket neighborhoods but they wouldnt be considered racially segregated. You can find people of either racial category mentioned above, intermingled in the same community. They may also even frequent the same churches. The surprising thing I noticed upon moving here was the amount of mixed race couples in the area. Being from New Jersey, I expected a difference between the north and the south. But there are many mixed race couples to my surprise.
I feel that the areas that are segregated within the city are not segregated due to racial make-up. It is more in relation to income guidelines. There are pocket neighborhoods that are very expensive but they are not solely white or black. On the other end of the spectrum there are some areas in the city with poorer and they are not over populated with only people of color, there are whites that have not been able to pull themselves up out of their situation.
